A department that pursues environmental issues from a broad perspective
In the Department of Environmental Science, students learn about environmental issues that have become major global challenges in today's society. The course covers a wide range of issues such as the global environment, food production, resource circulation, and the living environment, with a focus on the natural environment including biological organisms. Our aim is to cultivate "reliable human resources" with a broad perspective and a global viewpoint, to create, preserve, and restore an environment where people and nature can coexist in harmony.
Resolving major issues in the global environment
Although global environmental issues such as global warming, deforestation, desertification, and ocean pollution are extremely serious, the large scale of these issues makes it difficult for us to view them as problems “close to home”. The department utilizes a technology called "remote sensing" to observe global environmental changes from remote locations via satellites and drones. Ultimately, our goal is to better understand various phenomena in Earth’s ecosystems to mitigate and solve environmental problems for a more sustainable future.
Developing safe and comfortable urban environments and disaster prevention
As well as nature, the towns and cities where we live, social infrastructures, and homes are important environments for human beings. In this department, students also learn about the creation, maintenance, and preservation of safe and comfortable urban and residential environments. Japan is prone to natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. To address this, our department seeks ways to mitigate disasters through better preparation and protection measures, thus creating a more robust disaster prevention program for society; this is a major theme in this department.
Environmental engineers needed in all industries
Today, corporate activities cannot proceed without an environmental perspective. Environmental issues such as waste reduction and recycling, CO2 reduction and decarbonization, and achieving sustainable development goals are fundamental for corporate management. Therefore, there is a high demand for specialized engineers and workers with environmental expertise in all industries. Possible career paths in the private sector include construction and landscape architecture, environmental assessment, and public service through urban planning and the development of sustainable environmental practices.
