The only department to study advanced biotechnology
The Department of Bioscience is the only department in the College of Bioresource Sciences offering a broad range of field studies that aim to elucidate and make the most of the mechanisms of biological molecules and the workings of living organisms. Enrolled students gain comprehensive knowledge, practical problem-solving abilities, and basic research skills through excellent programs focused on immersive problem-based learning experiences in which they take an active role. This allows students to develop a thorough understanding of bioscience phenomena, allowing them to contribute to enriching the lives of others toward a better future.
Active use of information and digital technology
It has become essential in the field of bioscience to introduce and utilize information and digital technology. To meet these needs, the curriculum covers a number of fundamental and applied subjects related to information technology and artificial intelligence. Fundamental subjects include “Data Science Basics” and “Artificial Intelligence for Life Science”. To gain skills in handling computer and imaging information in advanced and challenging subjects, we offer a variety of courses, including “Bioinformatics Analysis of Genetic Information” and “Image Analysis of Cells and Viruses”.
A flexible curriculum with a broad range of course offerings for customized study
There are three specialized course offerings: “Nutrition and Health Science”, “Fermentation and Chemical Biology”, and “Microorganisms and Plants”. Students who enroll in the Department of Bioscience must choose one of these three courses at the end of the first year. Introductory courses during the first year provide an overview of the academic areas covered by the department, to help students develop their own career path. From the second to the fourth year, students will work on compulsory, elective, and compulsory–elective subjects based on the specialized course they select. The flexible curriculum, which allows students to take different courses and change courses from year to year, provides an opportunity for the students to study a wide range of subjects in the bioscience field. From the third to the fourth year, students join a particular laboratory and conduct research to write a graduation thesis.
Emphasis on learning and social connections
The ultimate goal of the Department of Bioscience is to train individuals to apply their knowledge and basic research skills to create new industries and build a healthy and vibrant society. For this purpose, we offer courses such as "Creation of Innovative Bio-industry" and "Smart Cell Industry" which aim to help students create new bio-industries in the future. "Nutrition in Industry", "Chemistry of Drug and Cosmetics", and "Microorganisms in Industry" courses develop the fundamentals necessary for collaboration with industry. Outstanding researchers and developers from companies and research institutes visit the department frequently to give lectures on the applications and practical uses of bioscience in various industries and research fields.
