教育方針および目標

  • The goal of this course is to build upon what you have learned in both high school and university freshman English classes. A key component of achieving this is to help students feel more comfortable and confident using English.

略歴

  • I grew up in a very small town in Ireland, along the border with Northern Ireland, called Clones. The population of my hometown at that time was about 2,500 people - fewer people than on the NUBS campus. I studied Computer Science at Dundalk Institute of Technology for my undergraduate degree, and later studied Applied Linguistics at the University of Birmingham for my master’s degree. In 2003, I moved to Seoul, where I taught English before moving to Japan in September 2004 to teach English in the Career English program at NUBS. I lived in Fujisawa and Yokohama for about twelve years, before moving to Tokyo where I have now been living for over two years.

研究テーマ

  • My main area of interest is Critical Discourse Analysis and Corpus Linguistics. In particular, I am interested in studying xenophobia in Premier League (football) match reports in broadsheet and tabloid newspapers in England. To aid this research,I have compiled a corpus of match reports which now stands in excess of six million words and counting.
